Abstract

Digital transformation is the leading technology trend of our times. The lecture demonstrated that digital transformation has been so successful because it addresses actual problems of self-observation and self-control in modern societies. However, every solution always creates new problems. Therefore, the key question addressed by the lecture is: What problem does digital transformation solve? (Lecture in German)

Prof. Dr. Armin Nassehi is the author of numerous books. In his 2019 publication “Muster – Theorie der digitalen Gesellschaft” (Patterns: Theory of the Digital Society), the sociologist explains that digital transformation is just a particularly sophisticated technical solution to a problem modern societies have always faced: How does society, how do businesses, states, organisations, law enforcement authorities, and we ourselves deal with invisible patterns?

Prof. Dr. Armin Nassehi has held the Chair of Sociology at the LMU Munich since 1998. He has also been a member of numerous expert commissions, including, since 2020, the Bavarian Ethics Council and the scientific advisory board of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. In addition, he was appointed to the “Corona” expert council of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government and the expert committee established in the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care to combat the pandemic in long-term care. He is a fellow of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in 2020/2021.
